Volcano tours for 2020 (VolcanoDiscovery Newsletter #29, Feb 2020)
2020 started with a large eruption of Taal in the Philippines, illustrating once more that volcanoes are unpredictable and can cause great destruction.
Nevertheless, eruptions that make the usually bad headlines are fortunately the exception and very rare events. On the other hand, there are many volcanoes, especially those in near permanent activity, which can be visited quite safely. Witnessing them, done properly and with the right precautions in place, can offer great rewards - no other force in nature can display better that our earth is alive.
If you're curious to get to know them better, here are a few tours we propose in 2020 which are guaranteed and where a few people can join in still:
Volcano Specials: 1-7 Mar 2020 Reventador, 4-8 May 2020 Krakatau, Ebeko / Klyuchevskoy in planning for early April
We sometimes organize tours with loose programs, often with short-notice, aimed at very small groups of avid volcano photographers or those interested in visiting particularly interesting volcanoes, which are currently very active. Please drop us a line if you're in for any of these adventures:
Ethiopia: 14-27 Mar 2020 Desert, salt and volcanoes (Danakil desert)
Visit Erta Ale, the only volcano in the world right now with a lava lake one can visit from close (during recent months, it has again become quite well visible), and the out-of-the world colorful landscapes of Dallol hydrothermal system with its green ponds, yellow fumaroles, bizarre salt formations, and the varied scenery of forested highlands, upland grassland, steppe, desert and salt lake deposits.
Greece: 28 Mar - 04 Apr 2020 Land of Theseus
The Saronic gulf is the "Gate of the Aegean Sea" and it looks like a miniature of the entire Aegean Sea with its islands and its scenic landscape. Discover unspoiled landscapes and hidden natural and archeological treasures of the volcanic peninsula of Methana and its surroundings on easy to moderate walks and excursions. The tour takes place at the very best time of year - expect abundant wildflowers and an exploding nature everywhere.
Italy: 11-19 April 2020 From Stromboli to Etna
A classic among our volcano adventures, this tour takes you to some of the most active and interesting volcanoes in the world: Etna, the giant ever-changing volcano that dominates Sicily; Vulcano, in the Ancients' belief home to Vulcanus, God of Fire; Lipari with its spectacular obsidian and pumice deposits; and Stromboli, "Lighthouse of the Tyrrhenian Sea", the permanently active volcano that gave its name to the Strombolian type of volcanic eruptions.
Indonesia: 3-19 May 2020 From Volcanoes & Spices
The legendary Molucca Sea is not only one of Indonesia's most interesting and beautiful areas, but it also has the largest density of active volcanoes of any region in Indonesia. On our latest tours, guests could enjoy 3 spectacular eruptions at Ibu, Dukono and Karangetang!
DRCongo: 1-8 June 2020 Nyiragongo lava lake & mountain gorillas
The heart of this adventurous expedition is two nights camping on the rim of the giant summit caldera of Nyiragongo volcano, above its violently active lava lake which is the word´s largest! Second highlight is a trek through dense rainforest to observe a family of mountain gorillas, endangered primates which found a safe heaven in Virunga National Park.
Vanuatu: 20 Sep - 5 Oct 2020 Volcanoes & Cultures
Our expedition to Vanuatu is not only a volcano tour with a professional volcanologist at your side to discover otherworldly Ambrym caldera and superb fireworks of Yasur, but an immersion into the diverse and rich traditional culture of the islands, the daily life in remote jungle villages where you meet the very hospitable and welcoming people of Vanuatu.
