Dear friends and guests,

we hope you are all well!
This soon-to-end year of 2022 has been a surprising and very remarkable year from a volcanic viewpoint. Let's mention 3 highlights that truly stand out:

1) The largest-ever recorded volcanic explosion from the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcano in Tonga back in January, producing a plume that reached an incredible 58 km (190,000 ft!) altitude and shock waves that circled the globe several times. Explosion sounds could be heard in Alaska 9,700 km (6,000 mi) away from the volcano!

2) Iceland's second rift zone eruption in a row: together with last year's eruption at the same spot, the two spectacular rift eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula likely herald the beginning of a new geological phase in this part of Iceland - chances are we will see more such eruptions in the years and decades to come!

3) Another "long wait" found its end when Maunaloa, the world's largest active volcano on Hawaii erupted spectacularly a few weeks ago, after its longest historically recorded interval of quiescence of 38 years (1984-2022)! When will be the next one? It doesn't seem to us that the last eruption has emptied Maunaloa's magma storage significantly. Historically, the volcano has been erupting every few years or so on average. Maybe we're now in for a period with more frequent eruptions from Hawaii's giant?

Perfect in spring

Among our destinations, Greece has a sweet spot with us (and we spend most of our time here...); not only one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but also a paradise to learn about volcanoes and geology in a relaxed environment as well. This is particularly true if you choose to come to less-known areas!
18-25 Mar 2023: Saronic Gulf
07-12 May 2023: Milos Island
13-20 May 2023: Nisyros Island

Iceland - Land of Fire and Ice

Our legendary Iceland geo-photo tour with Chris, our Iceland expert (many also remember him for his gourmet-cooking talents...). We take only 6 people on each tour for enhanced flexibility and comfort, but still have two spots left on the tour from 2-16 July.

Italy - see active volcanoes!

Visit Europe's active volcanoes and enjoy Mediterranean flair with its delicious cuisine! Accompanied by an enthusiast volcanologist, discover Etna, Vulcano, Lipari and Stromboli on our fantastic Stromboli to Etna tour from 4-21 May 2023 and 30 Sep - 8 Oct 2023, or - combine it with Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei, the Grand Tour from 6-20 October.
