Volcano Tours to Ethiopia's Danakil desert: Erta Ale, Afdera and Asale Salt lakes, Dallol
Dallol's colorful hot springs and salt structures are one of Earth's greatest natural wonders.
Ethiopia is one of the world's most fascinating and diverse countries as well as a geology wonderland. We specialize in traveling to the Danakil desert in Ethiopia's northeastern corner.
Located in the heart of the Afar triangle, this is the region where East Africa is being ripped apart of the rest of the continent by titanic tectonic and volcanic forces underground. It is, apart from Iceland, the only place on the planet, where a developing oceanic spreading ridge can be observed on land.
The deep rift valley separates high basalt plateaus cut by uncountable deep canyons, and is covered not only by the deepest desert in the world, but also spectacular salt lakes, hot springs, uncountable lava fields and fissures, as well as a range with active volcanoes including famous Erta Ale. Erta Ale is remarkable for its often active lava lake, which can be approached from very close. North of it you'll find Dallol, "the strangest place on Earth", as National Geographic labelled it. It is truly one of the earth's greatest natural wonders, a vast hydrothermal area with bizarre multicolored salt formations, fumaroles, small geysers and colored acid salt lakes.
Having many different climate zones with very fertile volcanic soils, Ethiopia's highlands and valleys might have been the place where our human race originated.
