The 17-days study and trekking tour crosses Java from West to East and ends on Bali. Along the way, we visit and climb some of its most interesting and active volcanoes: Papandayan and Galunggung in West Java, Merapi in Central Java, Kelud, Semeru, Bromo, the Tengger caldera, and Ijen in East Java.
This tour combines easy to moderate hikes with some adventurous trekking and its main goal is to see Java's volcanoes from close-up. Besides, you will get a deep impression of Java's varied landscapes, its colorful culture and cheerful people. Made for couples or small groups, this tour allows you to travel with a maximum of flexibility.

17 days itinerary Jakarta - Bali

Day 1: Arrival & meeting in Jakarta
Arrival in Jakarta, transfer to downtown hotel and group dinner.
Day 2: Transfer to Bandung – Museum of Geology – Tangkuban Perahu volcano
In the morning, a private minibus picks us up at the hotel and brings us straight to Bandung city, a volcanic city, the central of volcanological survey of Indonesia and monitoring volcanoes. After a visit to Museum of Geology Indonesia, in the afternoon we will visit Tangkuban Perahu volcano.
Day 3: Transfer to Garut - Climb Papandayan volcano
Transfer to Garut city, proceed to Papandayan volcano and climb in the beautiful volcanic area to explore hot springs & volcanic craters (Papandayan).
Day 4: Kamojang – Galunggung volcano
Visit Kamojang geothermal field and Galunggung volcano and its surroundings
Day 5: Scenic train ride to Yogyakarta - Prambanan Temple
An early train (first class) brings us comfortably directly to the beautiful, lively city of Yogyakarta, Central Java's capital. The ride is very scenic and takes about 7-8 hrs.
Day 6: Borobodur Temple - Merapi volcano and its surroundings
Visit of Borobodur Temple - Further excursions / observation of Merapi volcano depending on activity
Day 7: Free day in Yogya
Opportunity to explore downtown Yogya (Sultan's Palace, water castle, museums, markets etc.). Optional fun city-tour on becak (rickshaws). Option to visit the important Hindu temples of Prambanan and to attend a Ramayana ballet performance in the evening.
Day 8: Climb Merapi volcano for sunrise - Transfer to Kediri (near Kelud)
Climb Merapi starting at around midnight to reach the top at sunrise. After descending and lunch back at the base, transfer to Kediri city near Kelud volcano in East Java.
Day 9: Kelud volcano
A relaxed day to visit Kelud volcano (conditions allowing), the observatory post and observe its activity after the last explosive eruption in 2014 which ejected debris and ash column 12 miles into the air and recorded historically as one of the biggest eruption of Kelud. The rest of the day is free at leisure.
Day 10: Transfer to Malang - Tengger massiv - Semeru
Transfer to Malang, then scenic drive into the Tengger caldera via an impressive route to a village at the base of Semeru.
Day 11: First etappe on the trek to Semeru
Start the climb to Semeru through a long but moderate trek until Kalimati camp
Day 12: Climb to Semeru's summit
Strenous climb up the steep cone of Semeru for sunrise, descend and hike to second camp at a lake.
Day 13: Hike back to Ranu Pani and 4X4 transfer to Bromo
Hike back to Ranu Pani, 4x4 drive to the Tengger caldera
Day 14: Bromo volcano & Tengger caldera
Relaxed day to explore Bromo volcano and the Tengger caldera. Visit of the local volcano observatory and introduction to monitoring techniques of the volcano.
Day 15: Sunrise over the Tengger Kaldera - Transfer to Ijen
Jeep (or hike) to sunrise viewpoint - Transfer to Ijen Plateau, coffee plantations, hot bath in nearby natural hot volcanic springs.
Day 16: Kawah Ijen volcano - transfer to Bali
Climb and visit of Ijen's crater, descend to the sulphur mining area and the turquoise acid crater lake. In the afternoon transfer to Bali.
Day 17: End of tour on Bali
Your tour with us ends on Bali.

The tour will be accompanied / guided on location by one of our professional local guides in Indonesia, typically Andi or Galih. They have extensive knowledge not only about the volcanoes, but also about their country and culture.
Our guides all speak English and Indonesian, some also French.

Physical requirements

The hikes in the program range from fairly easy to challenging. This tour is challenging and only suitable for peole in good to excellent physical condition and experience in hiking(walks on partly difficult terrain with steep passages on loose or rocky ground, total hiking walking time up to 8-10 hours, max. horizontal distances up to ca. 15 km, max. climbing during a day: 1000-1500m). If you have doubt about your condition, please contact us.
