On this tour you will explore the best known and most active volcanoes of East Java: Bromo and the spectactular Tengger caldera, the constantly active Semeru and Ijen volcano with its infamous acid lake and sulphur mines.
Hot springs, rainforests, dramatic landscapes, Indonesia's welcoming and charming people, scientific and local competence, a mixture of fun and adventure await you. The tour is ideal as an excursion from Bali and is designed for individuals or small groups on request.

5 days itinerary (incl. observation camp at Semeru)

Day 1: Arrival in Surabaya - transfer to the Tengger volcano (Bromo)
Start of the tour in Surabaya. Drive into the Tengger caldera via an impressive route on open jeeps to enjoy the dramatic landscape of deep valleys and steep cliffs.
Day 2: Bromo volcano & Tengger caldera
Relaxed day to explore Bromo volcano and the Tengger caldera. Visit of the local volcano observatory and introduction to monitoring techniques of the volcano.
Day 3: Sunrise excursion to overview of Bromo - rainforest of the National Park - observation of Semeru volcano
Sunrise from the famous viewpoint overlooking the Bromo-Tengger caldera. Jeep ride to Semeru's south side and observation camp (Semeru volcano).
Day 4: Transfer to Ijen volcano
Transfer to Ijen Plateau, coffee plantations, hot bath in nearby natural hot volcanic springs.
Day 5: Kawah Ijen volcano - return to Bali or Surabaya
Climb and visit of Ijen's crater, descend to the sulphur mining area and the turquoise acid crater lake. In the afternoon transfer back to Surabaya or Bali, end of service.

Arrival info:

The tour starts normally in Surabaya or Malang and ends on Bali or back in East Java (Surabaya). If you want to start the tour from Yogyakarta or Bali, we can provide you with connecting flight tickets or land transfers on request.
While it is possible to start the tour at any time of day from Surabaya, the suggested route on the first day into the Tengger massiv from the west via Malang requires an early start (by around 10am at the latest) from Surabaya.

Physical requirements

The hikes in the program are fairly easy (maximum hiking efforts ca. 5 km distance, climbing of up to 500 m, total duration max. 3 hours) for everybody with good normal fitness.
