Lesbos island, the third largest island in Greece, is also one of the country's most charming and best-kept secrets. It boasts both stunning nature, charming villages, small ports, beautiful wild beaches, medieval towns and great interesting cultural heritage dating back to the earliest civilizations in the Mediterranean about 9,000 years ago.
Its landscapes, half volcanic in origin, half formed by sedimentary and metamorphic bedrocks folded up during the tectonic collision between Africa and Eurasia, vary from lush olive-plantations and verdant forests to the alpine-like mountain peak Olympus towering over its center, to dramatic volcanic moonscapes in the northwest. Here, it hosts one of Europe's most impressive UNESCO geo sites, the unique Sigri petrified forest for which we dedicate two full days to truly explore this wonder of nature.
A relict from its volcanic nature, Lesbos also has the hottest thermal springs of Europe (85-90 C!) and spectacular outcrops of old dikes, lava domes and lava flows.
Lesbos is the origin of the famous drink ouzo - you will have the chance to try out local varieties you won't find elsewhere as every place prides itself to offer at least 20-30 different types. Last but not least, the culinary tradition of the island combined with the abundance and freshness of local food sources - from vegetables to fruit, fish and local meats - turn every visit to even the smallest local tavern into a gastronomic highlight.

Lesbos 9 days

Day 1: Arrival on Lesbos
Pickup from airport, short transfer to our fantastic eco-friendly beach hotel in Thermi. Time to explore the area, swim or relax. Welcome dinner.
Day 2: Olives, Ancient traces, Gulf of Geras and the vibrant capital
Easy to moderate walk through the beautiful green hilly landscape of southeastern Lesbos, dominated by lush olive plantations. We visit an impressive Roman acqueduct, reach the scenic Gulf of Geras where we have lunch at the beach, and possibly can swim.
In the afternoon, continue to hike to the vibrant capital of Mytilini, where we have time to explore its lively old town and have a delicious dinner in a local tavern.
Day 3: The art of Pottery making
Short transfer to Mandamados village, the center of pottery making in the island. Visit of a local workshop (opportunity to buy great earthware!), then visit one of Greece's most magnificent monasteries at the outskirts of the village.
Relaxed scenic hike towards a small fishing harbor for late lunch, swimming possibility afterwards at a gorgeous beach. Return to the hotel in the early afternoon.
Day 4: Mt Olympos and Agiassos town
Transfer to the center of the island. Climb the summit (45 mins) to enjoy breathtaking views over all of Lesbos and the nearby Turkish coast. Descend through lush forest to the medieval town of Agiassos, known for it almost magical flair. Lunch in a popular traditional tavern serving local meze (many small plates with varaious delicious appetizers all shared).
Relaxed hike along an old mule track down into the main river valley of the island, where we'll reach the (now abandoned) taverna where we'll see giant, 2000+ year-old plane trees and where Theophilos Chatzimichael, one of the most famous artists of Lesbos, used live.
Day 5: Polychitos hot springs
Visit the impressive hot springs at Polychitos, then go for lunch at Skala at the southern shore of the second Gulf of Lesbos, the Gulf of Kalloni.
In the afternoon, short hike to the cape of Agios Fokas at the southern shore, and visit the endless, impressive Vatera beach (swimming opportunity!).
Return to Thermi in the afternoon.
Day 6: Molyvos - Sigri
Today, we transfer to the opposite corner of the island, with stops in the scenic port of Skala Sikamineas, and the medieval town of Molyvos where we also have lunch.
Arrive in the small relaxed village of Sigri in the afternoon.
Day 7: Petrified forest of Sigri
We need a full day to visit and appreciate one of the world's most remarkable geo-sites, as well as the very well-made and informative museum of natural history in Sigri.
The area is famous for having the largest and best preserved large-tree (incl. sequoia) forest in the world, covered by hot ash flows approx. 12 million years ago during a series of massive volcanic eruptions, whose traces are still visible today.
Day 8: Eressos beach
Spare day for activities in the Sigri area, depending on the preferences of the group, weather etc. We can hike to or simply visit the famous beach of Eressos, visit its ancient acropolis (short walk, 20-30 mins), and admire the stunning ancient volcanic landscape and the fertile valley where the beach town is located.
Lunch in one of the beautiful tavernas built on decks above the beach. Time for swimming before returning to Sigri.
Day 9: Kalloni, return to airport
Transfer to the airport or any other destination on the island. Normally, we have plenty of time and can stop in Kalloni to visit the great exhibition of the environmental center and have a nice lunch at the beachfront before reaching the airport in time for your return flight.

Arrival info:

The tour starts at Mytilene airport and ends there. Most easily, it can be reached with direct flights from Athens. Depending on the date and origin, some charter airlines also offer direct flights.
An interesting option to travel to/from Lesbos could also be the night ferry from Pireus.

Tour guide

The tour is normally guided either by German volcanologist Dr. Tom Pfeiffer or photographer and amateur geologist Tobias Schorr. Both have been traveling on the Greek volcanic areas (Methana, Milos, Santorini, Nisyros) for more than 20 years and know the islands better than even most local people do.
Tom completed his PhD studies on the topic of the great Minoan eruption of Santorini. He made the important discovery of a 3600-year-old olive tree buried alive in the pumice deposit that now can be seen in the small geological museum in Perissa.
This allowed the most precise dating of one of the most significant natural event in the Bronze age (to 1613+-13 years BC) so far.
His colleague Tobias, with whom Tom alternates on this tour, is a true specialist for Greece in general, boasting in-depth knowledge about its culture, history, people, flora, fauna and of course geology. He is known for his good eye and discoveries of rare minerals, plants, animals, or hidden archeological artifacts during the various excursions.
