Tectonic Summary
The June 24, 2026, M 7.5 earthquake southeast of Yumare, Venezuela, occurred as a result of shallow strike-slip faulting near plate boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates. At the location of the earthquake, the Caribbean plate moves eastward relative to South America at a rate of about 20 mm/yr. This movement is primarily accommodated by a major system of right-lateral strike-slip faults traversing northern Venezuela – the San Sebastian fault system along Venezuela’s northern coast (17 mm/yr), and the Bocono fault system extending westward from the epicenter into interior Venezuela (12 mm/yr). The earthquake's location, shallow depth (10.0 km), and right-lateral strike-slip mechanism are consistent with rupture primarily along this plate boundary system along the San Sebastian fault system, which extends along the northern coast of Venezuela.
This event was the mainshock of a severe seismic doublet sequence, occurring just 39 seconds after an M 7.2 foreshock. A doublet sequence – defined as two earthquakes of similar magnitude that occur close in time and proximity - likely indicates a complex, rupture-interaction process.
Northern Venezuela has a history of large, damaging earthquakes. However, in the immediate 250 km vicinity of these June 24, 2026, earthquakes, there have only been seven M6 and larger earthquakes in the past century. The region recently experienced a doublet in September 2025 consisting of an M 6.2 and an M 6.3 earthquake WSW of the 2026 event; the 2025 sequence caused at least one fatality, over 110 injuries, and extensive structural damage across Zulia and Lara. In September 2009, an M 6.4 earthquake to the ENE injured 18 people and damaged buildings near Morón, and an M 6.0 event in 1989 caused slight damage in the Valencia area. Farther west, an M 6.1 earthquake struck the region in April 1975. The most devastating modern earthquake in the surrounding area was the July 1967 M 6.6 Caracas earthquake, centered approximately 131 km to the east, which caused around 240 fatalities, hundreds of injuries, the collapse of multiple high-rise apartment buildings, and widespread destruction. In broader Venezuela, there have been five M 7+ earthquakes in northern Venezuela or near the coast since 1900.

Note: This earthquake was the second event in a doublet. This magnitude 7.5 mainshock was preceded by 39 seconds by a 7.2 foreshock. Impacts will be combined in this entry.

Alert level for this earthquake: Level RED

Based on seismic and statistical models, USGS estimates that the risk of fatalities and damage from this earthquake is very high. The main factors that contribute to this evaluation are:
  • The maximum expected ground shaking from this quake likely reached dangerous levels near the epicenter (level IX or Violent on the MMI scale).
  • A large number of people was exposed to strong shaking from the quake.
  • The quake hit at relatively shallow 10 km (6 mi) depth, which resulted in stronger shaking on the ground near the epicenter.

Comment

Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though resistant structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and adobe block construction.
A magnitude 6.6 earthquake 132 km n of this event struck Caracas, Venezuela on July 30, 1967 (UTC), with estimated population exposures of 1,197,000 at intensity VII and 952,000 at intensity VIII, resulting in a reported 240 fatalities.
Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as tsunamis that might have contributed to losses.
Source: USGS
Estimated economic losses are 1-5% GDP of Venezuela.
Red alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. High casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread. Past red alerts have required a national or international response.

Expected fatalities

The risk of fatalities from this quake is considered very high and classified as Level RED, the highest on the color scale from Green (low) to Red (very high). USGS estimates that there is a 9.7% chance of between 100 and 1,000 fatalities caused directly by the ground shaking and a 14.1% chance that between 100,000 and 10,000,000 fatalities occurred. The likelihood that there are more than 10,000,000 fatalities is less than 1%.

Expected economic damage

The economic impact of this earthquake is expected to be very high (Level RED. Light to moderate damage can be expected in a large area and even far from the epicenter, heavy damage might be wiedespread in a still large area around the epicenter. USGS calculates an 48% chance of total economic loss in the range of 10,000-100,000 million US Dollars and a 8.1% risk of losses between 100,000 and 10,000,000 million US Dollars. Total economic loss from this quake is not likely to surpass 100,000 million US Dollars (less than 1% chance).

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?

The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.

26 aftershocks for this quake so far

For this strong earthquake, 26 aftershocks (above mag. 2) have been detected so far. The strongest was a magnitude 4.5 quake that hit 3 days after the mainshock in 27 km (17 mi) distance, in Falcón, 47 km northeast of San Felipe, Estado Yaracuy, Venezuela, on Sunday, Jun 28, 2026 on 04:46 am (local time GMT -4).
The most recent aftershock occurred 2 weeks ago 42 km east of San Felipe, Estado Yaracuy, Venezuela, and had a magnitude of 4.3.

What are aftershocks?

Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.

Earthquake statistics

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 56 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 59 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):
  • Mag. 7 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 62.5 years)
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.04 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 25 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 0.11 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 9 years)
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 2.3 quakes per year
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 18 quakes per year
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 58 quakes per year (or 4.9 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 70 quakes per year (or 5.8 quakes per month)
The area where this quake occurred has a high level of seismic activity. It has had at least 2 quakes above magnitude 7 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 60 to 65 years.
