Italy is the birthplace of modern volcanology. Volcanic activity from Vesuvius, the Campi Flegrei, Etna, and the Eolian Islands has been documented since ancient times and has fascinated people throughout the centuries. Vesuvius, the volcano that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 A.D. later became home to the first volcano observatory, from where the science of volcanology started to evolve.
Etna on Sicily is not one of the most active volcanoes in the world, but also one of the most complex and interesting ones. Nearby Stromboli with its frequent fireworks on the tiny island with the same name is one of the few volcanoes in the world that show near-persistent activity, so characteristic that it gave its name to "strombolian" activity.
Neighboring Vulcano volcano was believed to be the home of the God of Fire and named after it.
