Volcano tours in summer 2020? Yes, in Greece! (VolcanoDiscovery Newsletter #31, May 2020)
Dear friends and guests,
We hope you are all well, even if most of us have been impacted in one way or another.
Writing this newsletter has been on my to-do list for many weeks while in the beautiful Greek capital Athens. I may not have transformed this quiet phase into significant productive work, but I did manage to come up with some excellent ideas for future tours by spending much time outside, hiking and exploring the fascinating Ymittos mountain at the city limits of Athens. In a new partnership with
Ecotourism Greece, this downtime has given birth to offer a series of various half and full day walking excursions directly from Athens!
We are now finally seeing encouraging signals from everywhere that this crisis can and will be overcome. In particular, traveling will soon be possible again as countries are about to reopen to tourism, one by one.
Luckily, our business identity is a good match for a different world of traveling: we only have very small groups, immerse ourselves in nature, avoid crowds, stay in small hotels and support local businesses and communities, who urgently need at least some tourism to survive economically. Above all, volcanoes continue to do their fascinating work everywhere and will do so in the future as well!
While it's still difficult to say whether travel restrictions for our worldwide destinations will be lifted in time the second half of 2020, we are optimistic about our European ones. In particular, Greece has largely avoided the spread of the virus and can now safely open up for tourism again: flights from abroad are again increasing. Starting from next week, restaurants will open again, most hotels will also be open from mid June, and entry to foreign travellers will be possible without mandatory quarantine from 1 July.
So, if you're looking for a holiday this summer and autumn, have a look at
Greece: Fascinating volcanic landscapes combined with archaeological sites, beautiful villages and ancient towns, unspoiled nature, spectacular scenery, and of course delicious food are all waiting for you here. Our small groups are guided by a professional English- and German-speaking volcanologist/geologist from our team.
