Volcano tours in 2021 (VolcanoDiscovery Newsletter Nr 32, Dec 2020)

Dear friends and guests,

This very unusual year 2020 is coming to an end, and we're betting many of us are actually looking forward to this. We hope that you have all been healthy and safe.

While we were all locked in our homes, volcanoes around the world have continued to live their own lives, which we were able to follow mostly through webcams or amazing contributions on social media, such as on our Facebook group Volcano News.

One of the most spectacular eruptions in recent months occurred at Klyuchchevskoy volcano, Kamchatka, Russia, which produced lava fountains and a long new lava flow on its southeastern flank. Another eruption recently occurred at Piton de la Fournaise, Réunion island. Last but not least, Italy's Etna just witnessed a new violent eruptive phase just a couple of days ago, adding yet another fresh layer of lava flow onto its upper southern flanks, erasing old beaten tracks, and creating new paths to explore...

Further around the world, the Pacaya and Fuego volcanoes in Guatemala, Sangay and Reventador in Ecuador, along with Semeru and Merapi in Indonesia, have all been very active recently too. We look forward to visiting at least some of them soon, hopefully during one of our special pop-up Volcano Special tours that we announce only a short time in advance, mainly through a special email list of people who tell us they might be interested in such tours (please send an email to tours(AT)volcanodiscovery.com if you want to be included).

Probably thanks to the generally hotter and dryer weather, most African countries have been much less affected by the pandemic. We're happy to see that the famous lava lake of Erta Ale in Ethiopia has continued to gradually increase in size, certainly meriting a closer visit as soon as conditions allow:

While almost all our tours this year were canceled, we managed to organize a fabulous tour in Italy during October from Stromboli to Etna, where our small group experienced the beauty of Sicily, complete with eruptions from Stromboli and Etna.

We're almost certain that next year will be much better and we'll have a chance to travel again. That's why we're confirming the following tours from our side, and we still have a few free spaces on each:

Italy: 8-16 May 2020 – From Stromboli to Etna

Greece: 22-29 May 2020 – Pearl of the Aegean - Santorini
You'll discover Santorini's many hidden treasures such as curious minerals, rare animals and plants, and prehistoric ruins, and all this thanks to your guide Tobias Schorr, who is a true specialist on Greece and a great photographer as well.

Iceland: 24 Jun - 8 Jul 2021 and 30 Jul - 13 Aug 2021 – Colors of Iceland: fire, earth, ice and water
Mighty waterfalls, hot pools and geysers, giant glaciers... Explore the variety of Iceland´s landscapes, learn how they were formed through tectonic plates drifting apart, and marvel at the different types of volcanic features.

Russia: 29 Aug - 16 Sep 2021 – Kamchatka - Land of Colors
Kamchatka, with its dramatic landscapes, wild unspoiled nature and many active volcanoes is a destination of great adventure. Our tour is aimed at people who have an interest in volcanoes, enjoy photography, and prefer being part of a small group.

Ethiopia: 13-26 Nov 2021 - Desert, salt and volcanoes
Experience one of the geologically most active areas on the planet! Erta Ale's lava lake is showing signs of returning to its previous splendor, and the surreal landscapes of the Dallol hydrothermal field will leave you speechless!

Note: We're happy to announce a full refund policy in case of cancellation due to travel restrictions, which means you'll get back your deposit if any travel restrictions are reimposed.
