Tipping guidelines on Kili:
It's common practise on Kili (and elsewhere in Tanzania) that every crew member expects a tip from you.
Porters: it's expected from clients to pay them around 3-5 USD per porter per day extra. As an example, for a party of two on a Machame route 7d/6n climb, an appropriate tip for porters would be around 150 USD per participant (10 porters are used x 7 days x 4 USD, divided by two...), or for the party of 4 on the same route, about 110 USD per person (15 porters x 7 days x 4 USD divided by 4...).
If you like to avoid the headache and potential trouble with calculating the tips, we can include the tips for your porters in our package on request and your guide will take care of it and hand them out your tip - 4 USD per porter per day. In addition to the very good salary and overall service we pay them, you can be sure that they will be happy to work for you.
Guides and assistant guides:
You should tip your guides,- an expected value would be around 15 USD for each guide and per day and per group, more or less according to your level of satisfaction.
A realistic value for a trip of 5-7 days length would be around 150 USD per climber for tips.
